Look on any website and you’ll get a long list of do’s and don’ts, but let’s face it, no matter what advice they give us packing is at relatively boring and in all honesty can be an absolute nightmare from start to finish. A lot of us don’t consider it at the time of moving as we just want to get that part of the task done, but with some forethought about what to unpack first it is possible to get organised. No doubt most of us are familiar with the moving checklist, but then why do so many of us not bother to include what to unpack first on the checklist. It seems that we are so occupied with the moving part of the journey that we completely forget what is necessary once we have been moved and the removal men and van have waved us good bye.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the first thing to get unpacked and assembled is the beds, unless you’ve got a bed with many pieces this is quite a simple job to do if you have enough space, so don’t let the guys from the removal team cover the middle of the bedroom floors with boxes and pieces of furniture. Without a bed you’re not going to sleep well and sleeping on a mattress on the floor will only remind your back of your student days. When the back ache kicks in you’ll soon wish that you’d sorted the beds the night before. We aren’t students anymore and most of us have left the rock and roll lifestyle behind us. My apologies, as I know that not all young people live like this and therefore everybody shouldn’t be tarnished with the same brush.
Once the beds are unpacked you’ll be hard pushed to find anything more worthwhile doing than unpacking the kitchen, yes I know it’s hard work, but you’ll be needing it soon, so why not get it over and done with. The quicker you have it set up and operational the quicker you’ll feel at home plus think of the money you’ll save not spending on takeaways.
To make things a little easier label the boxes when you pack, it doesn’t need to be neat and tidy just scribble all over them in marker pen that will do the trick. Unpack what you need; such as the pans, toaster and kettle and although it maybe chaotic it wouldn’t do you any harm to get the cooker and washing machine plumbed in as well. Don’t worry, no doubt the gas or electric man and plumber have seen much more mess that you’ve got going on and at least you’ve got moving in as the perfect excuse.
Now you’ve got the most important things done, a place to sleep and a place to prepare food and drink you can move on to the other tasks at will depending on you and what you prefer. You’re not going to need a checklist for every single item unless you have as a serious case of OCD. We’ve all got a system in place, or at least we like to think anyway. These suggestions have been made to make things a little easier for you and your family, no one wants a stressed out mum and wife on their case waving a rolling pin at them first thing in the morning
For an easier and simpler moving experience always remember to add unpacking to your moving checklist, otherwise when you are in chaos with boxes piled up to your arm pits and nowhere to move you may learn to regret it.
