Our parody on the Twelve Days of Christmas continues. We dare you not to sing them out loud!
Seven trucks a-pouring,
Six formers forming,
Five golden kings! (of finance that is!)
Four house plans to choose from,
Three French city planners,
Two steel-toed boots,
and a journal for my hopes and dreams!
************************************************************
The forms are set, and the concrete trucks are rolling onto the site—an exciting milestone in the construction process. But have you ever wondered what concrete is really made of?
Concrete may seem simple, but it’s actually a carefully balanced mix of three essential ingredients:
Portland Cement – When combined with water, cement forms a paste that coats the sand and aggregates. As it hardens, this paste binds everything together, creating a solid and durable structure.
Water – Water activates the cement through a chemical reaction called hydration and provides the workability needed to properly place the concrete. The ratio of water to cement (known as the water/cement ratio) plays a critical role: the lower the ratio, the stronger and less permeable the concrete.
Aggregates – These make up the bulk of the mix. Sand is the fine aggregate, while gravel or crushed stone acts as the coarse aggregate, giving concrete its strength and stability.
Beyond these core components, additional materials—known as admixtures—can be incorporated to enhance performance, improve durability, or adapt the mix to specific site conditions.
Curious to learn more about how these additives work and how concrete is reinforced to strengthen your home? Stay tuned.
